Started on December 21, 1951 with Srs. Josephina, Rita, Kochuthresia and Agnes as the pioneer members, this is the second Convent of the congregation. As directed by Rev. Fr. Thomas Poothathil, the Founder, a few sisters from Kaipuzha Convent used to teach in the St. Thomas School, founded by Fr. Thomas himself. On the occasion of the jubilee of Bishop Mar Thomas Tharayil, permission was granted by the Bishop to start a Convent here. Thus after a span of 23 years since the foundation of the congregation and its first House at Kaipuzha, this Convent came into being.
On January 19, 1952 Bishop Mar Thomas Tharayil christened this ‘St. Thomas Convent’. Later he raised this to the official status of a Convent on July 10, 1956, and Srs. Rita and Sr. Celine were appointed Superior and Asst. Superior respectively. The present chapel was blessed by Mar Thomas Tharayil on December 31, 1957.
Srs. Rita, Kochuthresia, Berchmans, Stanislaus, Gloria, Grace, Benjamin, Dennis, Regina, Louis, Sibia, Georgia, Pauline ,Vimala, Jerome and Florance , Sr. Elsy Tom, Sr.Johnsia, Sr. Karuna, Sr. Sithara, Sr. Jeena, Sr. Joby, Sr. Claret were the former Superiors. At present, Sr. Treesa Maria is the superior of this convent.
Allied Institutions
(i) St. Thomas U.P. School
Rev. Fr. Thomas Poothathil, Founder of St. Thomas Asylum at Kaipuzha, founded on June 7, 1927 St Thomas Primary School, keeping in view the proposed St. Joseph’s Congregation. This was upgraded into a U.P. School in 1955. An auditorium was constructed in the Platinum Jjubilee year as the memorial of the Rev.Fr.Thomas Poothathil the founder of the congregation.
(iii) St Thomas Balika Bhavan
With a view to provide orphaned and uncared-for girls with love, care and proper education, this Institute was founded on December 1, 1972 in Kannampally building. Although started under the diocese, it was later handed over to the Congregation.
The present building was blessed by Bishop Mar Kuriakose Kunnacherry on November 29, 1978. The services of Rev. Fr. Valloppilly in constructing the present building are worth mentioning. The support of Rev. Fr. Jacob Vellian, Messrs. Thommy Vallarkad, Chacko Aykarathundathil of Ettumanoor, Baby and Mary Mupparappallil of Edakoly by sizeable contributions, is gratefully acknowledged. Since 2003, this Institution was known as St.Thomas Orphanage. Now the name has been changed and it is known as Balika Bhavan.
The first Directress was Sr. Theophane, followed by Srs. Felix , Grace, Gonsalo, Jerome and Rositta.
Presently Balika Bhavan is not functioning due to the changes in the Govt. Rules and Regulations
